We recommend exercising caution and not storing valuables in your car if deciding to venture this way and outside of the resort. In general, Waianae is pretty much the complete opposite of places like Waikiki.

- Kaena Point, a remote and mostly untouched wilderness near Waianae, offers a serene escape for those looking to avoid the crowds. With rugged hiking trails, dramatic coastal cliffs, and captivating sand dunes, this hidden gem promises a journey off the beaten path, allowing you to connect with nature’s raw beauty in its purest form. It’s also known to have some great snorkeling spots.
Getting to Waianae
The best way to get to Waianae is by car. If you’re flying into Oahu, you can rent a car at the airport and drive to Waianae in about an hour. If you don’t want to drive, there are also bus options available.
If you’re staying in Ko’olina like we recommend most visitors do, they have a pretty competent shuttle system to and from the airport to make your vacation easier.

Waianae History

The name “Waianae” itself comes from the Hawaiian language, with “wai” meaning water, and “ʻanae” referring to large mullet. Mullet were farmed in the muliwai, or brackish-water pools, that were common on many Waianae beaches. These pools provided an ideal habitat for the mullet, which were raised in large numbers and used for food, as well as in religious and cultural ceremonies.

Hiking Trails Outside of Waianae, Hawaii

Ka’ala Hiking Trail: The Ka’ala Trail is a bit further away from Waianae but is well worth the trip. Sitting at around 7 miles out-and-back, you’ll be greeted with great views of the surrounding valleys. While Mt. Kaala is the highest point in Oahu, you don’t have to go all that way to enjoy the hike and good views. It’s a great way to see the full extent of the Waianae Coastline.
